Six draft VCS Assembly Strategic Position Statements have been drafted by the VCS Assembly Board. They will form the basis of the VCS Assembly’s key messages for 2010-11 and will be used amongst other things to lobby and influence candidates in the forthcoming election.
Consultation on these messages is open from 27 January – 9 March 2010 and will be finally approved at the VCS Assembly Board meeting on 10 March.

What does ‘Prevent’ mean for the Voluntary and Community Sector?
Tuesday 23rd February 2010
10 -12:30
GAVCA in Gloucester
Prevent is part of the Government’s Strategy to counter the threat from International Terrorism. There is a Prevent delivery plan for Gloucestershire in development and this meeting will include a briefing and discussion on Prevent and VCS involvement. It is open to anyone from a voluntary and community organisation and may be of particular interest to groups involved in creating safer and stronger communities. The meeting will be co-run by the VCS Assembly Team and Gloucestershire Constabulary.
The Preventprogramme has five main objectives which are intended to address specific causes of radicalisation.
- To challenge the ideology behind violent extremism and support mainstream voices;
- Disrupt those who promote violent extremism and support the places where they operate;
- Support individuals who are vulnerable to recruitment or who have already been recruited by violent extremists;
- Increase the resilience of communities to violent extremism; and
- Address the grievances which ideologues are exploiting.
